From the photographer: "There are still three places in Oregon to cross the Willamette River by ferryboat. They exist because it is more cost effective than building a bridge for the limited amount of traffic. They are located on country roads, and are popular for car clubs, motorcyclists and bicyclists. This is the Buena Vista Ferry, between Independence and Albany."
From the photographer: "An irrigation canal from the Willamette River cuts through the farmlands on Sauvie Island. The wooden barrier prevents pleasure boats from entering it. This island is between two large rivers, the Willamette and Columbia. This canal empties into the Columbia."
